In order to make the very most of your cash back credit card, and maximize the amount of earnings you receive in rebates, there are a few steps you can take. But first a reminder, cash back and rewards cards make sense if you can pay off your balance in full each month, otherwise you should opt for low interest cards.
Some sources suggest having at least two credit cards; one a cash back credit card, the other a non-reward credit card with a low interest rate. Using this method you can make purchases with high cash rebate values, --venues that offer 4%+ cash back, and then use the other card for purchases that offer 1%- in rebate percentage. This works well for people who find it difficult to pay off balances each month. If you must carry a balance then do so on the low interest card to save money. Remember; if you're happy with one credit card and are the slightest bit unsure if you want the added responsibility of another credit card, just stick with one. Juggling multiple credit cards can turn into a debt trap that is rarely easy to climb out of.
Some people advise to acquire cash back credit cards for all members in the household in order to maximize rebate earnings, however, most of us in the real world realize that you cannot give children, teenagers, etc., a credit card without expecting some consequences. If you're financially able to allow your teenagers to spend with credit cards, be sure to set limits, and ask your company how you can enforce the card's security.
Another option is to use your cash back credit card specifically for paying utility bills, i.e., cable, phone, electric, water, etc. Some card companies offer larger rebate percentages for purchases made in the process of paying bills. You can also use your cash back credit card for things like your mortgage, or rent; naturally as long as you keep paying your monthly balance! This will earn larger cash rebates as well. Be sure to read the terms and conditions of your credit card. Some may disallow rebates for bill paying.
An accepted strategy is to obtain more than one cash back credit card to gain the highest rewards for your spending habits. You will rarely find a card that gives 5% rebate for all types of purchases. Look for a card that gives 5% back on gas, and then another card that gives 5% back on groceries, pharmacies, and department stores. Realistically consider where you will use your card most often.
Business purchases are another way to benefit from cash back credit cards. For those consumers who own home or commercial businesses, business cash rebate credit cards are always available, and usually have sign up offers that are just as attractive as any other cash rebate credit card.
A final word of caution: For most of us its better to make large purchases on low interest credit cards rather than a cash back or other rewards card. Again, of you don't pay off the balance at the end of the billing cycle you will owe interest which is sure to be more than any earned rebates. To maximize your return remember to use the right card for your purchase.
